December 31, 2008

The North Carolina General Assembly has directed the Governor’s Crime Commission to report on the progress and accomplishments of each gang grant that was awarded from the legislative appropriations in FY 06/07 and FY 07/08. As Commission staff, they are requesting our assistance in compiling a strong report that will display the significant work the Safer Chatham Project has accomplished through the receipt of these grant funds.  That report has been submitted, and a copy of the report is below this letter.

I wish to thank our Safer Chatham Project Director Ann Watson, Project Coordinator Fredericka Carver and Lay Outreach Worker Sergio Borrayo for their work contributing to this report.  I want to congratulate our Gang Violence Prevention Committee for their work in putting this project together, with special thanks to the GVP Personnel Selection Sub-Committee.

This project has moved fast in the scant 3 months it has been operating as you will see in the detail of the report.   Our Chatham County Community has been receptive to the Safer Chatham Project, and we are very hopeful it will accomplish its goal of ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents across the County through Gang Violence Prevention.

I will take this opportunity to remind our Members, Volunteers and community that the Chatham Citizen Corps Council still needs to raise the balance of a local match now amounting to $5419.03 to secure the full funding of this project.  Donations are tax deductible, and are accepted in any amount.  Donations should be made to the Chatham Citizen Corps Council, and noted for the Safer Chatham Project.

Thank you,

Bill Lail

Chairman, Safer Chatham Project Administrator

Program Testimonials:

I am the new Youth Program Coordinator at the Hispanic Liaison.  Our objective of our program is also Gang Violence Prevention, and youth empowerment. Sergio came to my office last week to introduce himself and we had a short meeting discussion possible avenues of collaboration.  I invited Sergio to our Youth Group meeting here at El Vinculo Hispano last Tuesday.  We have a youth group that meets weekly to do educational and community service activities. He did attend, and he participated with the group in a field trip to Coventry House, a local retirement home, to sing Christmas Carols.  He also introduced himself to the group, told them about his role as a Gang Violence Prevention advisor, and told everyone that they could contact him at anytime if they had concerns or personal issues involving gangs and needed to talk to someone.  I thought they all responded very positively to him, and several group members mentioned that they would like to speak to him personally.  He will pass on his information to me to distribute to the group, and hopefully he will participate in more of our group's activities in the future.
